“Why am I here?” Keri McFadden asked.

She was in an interview room at the precinct. She was dressed in a tight-fitting purple dress decorated with hearts. She wore high heels and she had on heavy makeup. She did not look like someone who was still reeling from the loss of her fiancé. Sure, Linus had died six months ago, but she had claimed he had been her “soul mate” at the time of his death. If she were grieving, her grief had passed in six months.

Skip was seated across from her. Bud sat next to him. Bud was anxious to spring their trap, but Skip had wanted them to play their cards close to the chest. Any wrong hand they showed her could end up costing them the investigation.

Skip smiled and leaned forward. “I apologize for bringing you in today, Ms. McFadden.”

She did not reply.

“I know this must not be pleasant for you.”

Keri choked up. “Every time you guys show up or call me, it brings back memories of Linus.”

She’s good, Skip thought.

“I miss him so much,” she added, wiping her eyes.

“We hope this will be the last time,” he said.

She looked up at Skip, surprised. “What?”

Bud smiled, but it looked more sinister than pleasant. “Yes, we believe we’ve found a suspect in Linus’s death.”

She blinked. “Suspect? What happened to Linus was an accident. Everyone knows that. Even that medical lady said so.”

The smile on Bud’s face only grew wider. “Well, I’m here to say it was not. I’m sure you’ll be relieved to find out the truth.”

For a moment it looked like Keri would pass out.

“Are you okay?” Bud asked. “Can I get you a glass of water?”

“No, I’m fine. It’s just that for the last six months I thought the man I loved had died from carbon monoxide poisoning, but now you’re telling me he was…”

“Murdered,” Bud said.

Skip could see how much his partner was relishing this. “I would like to clarify that your fiancé did die from carbon monoxide poisoning,” he said, heading Bud off before he could tip their hand. “The evidence is irrefutable.”

She looked at him. “But he just said that Linus was murdered,” she said, pointing at Bud.

Skip said, “Even though, your fiancé died of carbon monoxide inhalation, we now believe someone forced him into the Jeep and staged his death as an apparent suicide.”

She looked at them and swallowed. “Can I have that glass of water, please?”

Skip turned to Bud. “Do you mind getting the lady a glass?”

Skip was not about to leave Bud in the same room as her. Bud was a professional and a damn good detective, but he was also prone to emotional outbursts. Skip could not risk anything happening now that they had rattled Keri.

Bud gave his partner a dirty look, but he got up and left the room.

Skip gave Keri a reassuring smile. She tried to smile back, but it was forced.

A few minutes later, Bud returned and placed a paper cup before her. She grabbed it and drank the water in one gulp.
